Our Approach

Addressing nutrition security through research, education & advocacy

FIG Lab Conceptual Framework

A diagram in the shape of a fig is labeled with health outcomes in the core, wrapped with two layers. The first layer represents food security and children's energy balance and the second is labeled psychosocial factors, socio-cultural factors, and the social and physical environment. Two insects hover, depicting policies and interventions. An arrow across the top reads "life course influences (ie. history, politics, society, environment, culture) over time

Policies

Policies made by governments, institutions, organizations, consist of laws, ordinances, regulations, or rules. Policies can be leveraged as innovations to promote nutrition security and health equity.

Systems

Systems interventions may impact all areas of an organization, institution, or community.

Environments

The economic, social, and physical environment influence health and nutrition outcomes. Shifts in food availability, transportation access, or the presence of food in health care settings are examples of food environment innovations to promote nutrition security and health equity.

Education

The FIG Lab strives to provide an engaged learning experience for undergraduate and graduate research assistants.

  • Students engage with community partners to conduct research in real-world settings.

  • Students conduct research and learn skills including evidence sythesis and mixed methods.

  • Our team approach encourages professional growth, project responsibilities, and research dissemination at all skill and educational levels.

Advocacy

Our applied research is designed to promote positive change in our communities and society at large. We strive to close evidence-to-practice and policy gaps in nutritional sciences and public health.

  • We make policy-relevant contributions to the scientific literature.

  • Our team writes policy position statements to translate the scientific evidence into calls to action.

  • We are committed to public engagement and scholarship by volunteering, developing opinion pieces, and engaging with local, regional, and national representatives.
